Why work in the voluntary sector?

Whilst the majority of workers in the volentary and charity sector contribute thier time for free, the number of people earning a living in these sectors is rising every year.

At present (Apr 2008) there are approximately 10000 people who work for voluntary and charity organisations on a salaried basis, as street fundraisers, administrators, organisers, managers, directors, researchers and campaigners, accounting altogether for over 2% of Britain's entire working population.

This is not altogether an insignificant number, and the voluntary sector is growing, with the number or organisations growing by over 30000 since 2000 with the creation of over 50,000 jobs, a number which is growing by as much as 10000 jobs a year. Significantly, private sector volumes have shrunk, and it is possible that an increased consideration for work life balance has contributed to this shift, with many casual and part time workers gravitating towards the voluntary sector, especially for short term employment. This is of particular significance to women, who occupy about two thirds of the voluntary charity sector jobs.
